Birthday / Christmas Cards – A Guide For Buyers
Tuesday, October 12th, 2010Buying birthday or Christmas cards can be fun, or it can be a chore, depending on how you approach it. If you look at it as a chore to be endured, you will not put much time or effort into the task, and it will show in the results. On the other hand, if you enjoy looking for cards for the right occasion, you will have fun and that will show in the type of cards that you select. Here are some tips to help you make shopping for cards easier, and therefore not a chore.
One step in the organization process is to start with a calendar for the year. Mark on the calendar all of the birthdays that you need to remember. Then highlight any of the holidays that you intend to send cards commemorating. Also make note of any anniversaries that are important to you. This gives you a good starting point. Of course, during the year, additional events will occur that can be added to your calendar. Many of these are more likely to be one-time events, like a baby shower for a friend or co-worker or a nephew’s graduation, which will not be annual events.
Now that you have your calendar all marked up, sit down and do some planning for card shopping. You might want to make a list of all the cards you need for each three month period of the year, and then do all of that shopping at one time. This will enable you to have the cards ready in advance to send at the appropriate time. Another approach is to keep a list of all the cards you need throughout the year in your wallet. Then, when you are out shopping and come across a card that you like, you can check to see if there is an occasion coming up for which the card might be appropriate.
Buying cards in bulk is no excuse for not still putting in the time to get the right card for the right person. People will notice if you have spent the time to choose one that is right for their personality. Work on a basis of around 5-10 minutes for choosing each card; so, if you have 5-6 cards to buy, then put aside an hour for buying them. Go to more than one store if you have to too, as the selection on offer from store to store can vary a lot.
If you want to get creative about finding just the right birthday cards, you might consider making them. Nothing is more special than something handmade. You might really surprise them with your hidden creativity or artistic abilities. There are different ways to do handmade; you could use a computer program and design a card that you print from your personal computer, or you could buy art and craft supplies and literally make the card from scratch. You can be sure that if you make your own cards they will be as unique as you are, and you can customize them to each recipient.
