Classic Kids Toys Buying Guide

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Play is critical in helping children develop both mental and physical skills, and toys are an ideal way we encourage them to express their creativity. Unfortunately, many of today’s toys do not promote the same level of creativity and exercise that the classics of yesteryear provided. If you are concerned that your child is not learning all that they should, then consider adding a few old-time toys to their collection. Not only will you help them develop more, but you will be able to relive those moments of simple happiness as your own children enjoy playing with those same toys that were your favorites so many years ago.

Some retro toys that can be played with outside are baseball bats, hula hoops, bikes, and roller skates. Certain toys have even been so well-loved that they have never even gone away. But, even so, moms and dads forget about them because they think they are old-fashioned or present a danger to their kids. This is not really a valid point though, because usually those same moms and dads used those same toys in their youth.

A specific retro toy that is meant for outside use that is regaining in popularity in the past few years is the pedal car constructed of steel. The ones being sold on the market right now are reminiscent of the body types that were manufactured in the 60s. The newer models have been upgraded for safety purposes, so now kids area able to pedal down the sidewalk in the same exact pedal car that you once played with. The reasons why this toy is becoming popular again is their sturdiness, their basic design, and the driving fun that awaits an active kid.

When thinking about toys for inside the house, you might think about allowing your kid to play with some Lego. Males in particular enjoy constructing all kinds of structures; however the Lego company also makes sets for females as well. In fact, there are even some sets that will allow girls to construct castles or mansions. Your kids can even get a lot of enjoyment out of the basic building blocks made of wood. Parents do not always remember that kids will take anything at all and turn it into a toy if they let them.

Wooden play objects are another classic toy that can never go out of style. Unfortunately, most parents do not realize that wooden toys are still popular and, even further, that they are still available for purchase. Many Internet stores sell a variety of wooden toys, including building blocks, rocking horses, and doll houses. As enjoyable as those toys were years ago, there is little reason to think that kids of today would not enjoy them just as well. As years pass, there is no doubt that the list of “classic toys” will continue to grow, as more durable and loved toys enter the market. However, the toys above have surely earned their place on the list, after being loved by children for many generations.

How To Host A Stress Free Dinner Party

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

The thought of planning a dinner party can be a cause of stress to lots of people. They want to make a good impression on those who they invite and are concerned about doing something ‘wrong‘. It does not have to be a stressful process though, so long as you follow a few guidelines…

Pick an occasion – Whilst it is not essential that there is a reason for you having a dinner party, it does help if there is one. Birthdays, promotions and housewarmings are all good occasions, as is Thanksgiving and Independence Day. If there is an occasion to celebrate then it helps to set the tone of the party, and ensures that everyone is in the party mood. The fact that there is no special occasion to celebrate should not stop you having a dinner party though.

Plan ahead – Organization is key to the success of your dinner party. The sooner you start getting things organized the better. Amongst other things, you will need to create a menu, choose the wines, polish the silverware, decide on the background music, buy some dinner candles and / or scented candles and work out a seating plan. None of these tasks are difficult, but if you leave them all to the last minute, and try to do them all at the same time, then they can become overwhelming. So, start getting at least some parts of your dinner party organized at least a week beforehand.

Let guests know as early as possible – If you are going to be putting in the time and effort to organize a dinner party then it would be shame if all those who you want to attend cannot make it. Therefore, you need to let them know about the event well in advance. You should send out written invitations a month or so beforehand and then follow up with a phone call a week later. If you only tell people about your dinner party a week before it is taking place then you should expect some people to have prior arrangements.

Think about what music to play – Music is an important party of any party, and dinner parties are no exception. You need to think about who will be attending and what their musical tastes are. Even though you are the host, it would be a mistake to just play what you want to listen to. For the early part of the night, opt for something soothing and melodic. After everyone has finished eating, and you are having a few drinks, you should up the tempo a bit. Having a range of CDs out and asking guests what they would prefer is the safest way to proceed.
